Singapore Business Review has reported that expats ranked the city as 5th costliest in the world in Mercer’s annual cost of Living Survey. However, Singapore is not the most expensive city for expats in Asia. This honor goes to Hong Kong, which was ranked second, though it is only because the currency of Luanda, the first placing, is pegged to the US dollar. As a result, the local accommodation cost in Hongkong soared.
Apart from Hong Kong and Singapore, three more Asian cities are featured in the list of top ten most expensive cities. These are, as expected, Tokyo (ranked third), Seoul (ranked sixth) and Shanghai (ranked eight). According to experts, many other Asian cities are quite costly. However, major financial hubs, such as Singapore and Hong Kong, will attract more talent than other cities. Foreigners prefer these two financial hubs more than other Asian cities.
Experts also opined the movements of this year were majorly governed by currency fluctuations, especially against US dollar. However, they also agreed that some cities, like Mumbai, bettered their ranks mostly because of a stronger economy and better career opportunities. Some other famous cities featured in the list were Zurich (ranked fourth), Geneva (ranked seventh), New York (ranked ninth) and Bern (ranked tenth).
